Student Residency in Turkey (İkamet) — Full A-to-Z Processing

The student residency permit (İkamet) is the official residence card issued by the Turkish Migration Directorate to every foreign student enrolled in a YÖK-accredited university. 180 Degrees Academy handles the full residency process and annual renewals on your behalf — including health insurance, address registration, Migration Directorate appointment booking, and even card delivery by post. Our service guarantees you a stable legal residency without ever visiting a government office alone.

What is the İkamet?

The student residency is an official plastic card issued by Turkey's Migration Directorate (Göç İdaresi) after your enrolment in a Turkish university. It lets you stay in Turkey legally for one to four years, renewable for the duration of your studies. Unlike a tourist visa, the İkamet is permanent throughout the academic year and grants additional rights such as opening a bank account, obtaining a driver's licence, joining the public health insurance (SGK), and working part-time under specific conditions.

Why every foreign student needs one

Turkish law requires every foreign student enrolled in a Turkish university to obtain a student residency within 30 days of entering Turkey. Failing to do so on time can lead to daily fines, a travel ban, or even deportation. Since 2024 Turkish authorities have tightened tourist visa renewals for students, making the conversion to student residency the safest and most stable way to remain legally in Turkey.

Required documents

  • Student certificate (Öğrenci Belgesi). An official document from your university confirming active enrolment; we obtain it for you within one day after final registration.
  • Passport + entry visa. Passport valid for at least two years and a still-valid entry visa (student or tourist) into Turkey.
  • Private health insurance (Özel Sigorta). A one-year insurance policy from a Turkish-approved provider, costing TRY 2,000–3,500 depending on age; we arrange this with our partner company.
  • Address registration (Numarataj). An official document from the district municipality proving your Istanbul address; we obtain it the same day you sign your lease.
  • Biometric photos. Four recent biometric-compliant photos (5×6 cm, white background, clear face, no smile).
  • Card fee receipt. Receipt for the residency card fee (Kart Bedeli) paid at a bank or tax office; TRY 565 for 2026.
  • e-Ikamet application form. We complete the full application on the official e-ikamet portal and book your appointment at the nearest Migration Directorate branch in Istanbul.

Residency timeline roadmap

  1. Week 1: University enrolment. We complete your official enrolment and obtain the original student certificate (Öğrenci Belgesi) needed for all later steps.
  2. Week 2: Insurance and address. We arrange your annual health insurance, sign your lease, and obtain your address registration (Numarataj) from the muhtar.
  3. Week 3: Application and appointment. We complete the online residency application via e-ikamet and book the nearest Migration Directorate appointment (usually 2–4 weeks).
  4. Appointment day: interview & fingerprints. We accompany you to the Migration Directorate to submit the file and provide fingerprints. The interview is short (15–20 minutes) and requires no language test.
  5. Weeks 4-8: Card delivery. The student residency card is delivered by Turkish Post (PTT) to your address within 4 to 8 weeks of the appointment.

Common mistakes to avoid

Applying late (after 30 days)

Any delay in submitting the student residency application after 30 days from entering Turkey exposes you to daily fines and possible future entry bans.

Buying non-approved health insurance

Not every Turkish health insurance is approved for residency purposes; we work only with insurers officially listed by the Migration Directorate.

Using a hotel or short-term address

Migration rejects address registration if it's a hotel or short-term stay — only annual rental contracts or university housing qualify.

Missing the renewal window

Renewal must be filed at least 60 days before current residency expires; missing the window cancels the residency and forces restart from scratch.

Travelling before receiving the card

Travelling before receiving the card may complicate re-entry; we recommend staying in Turkey until the card arrives.

Student residency FAQ

How long does the whole residency take?

From university enrolment to receiving the card by post, the process usually takes 4 to 8 weeks. Weeks 1–3 for file preparation and submission, then 4–8 weeks for processing by the Migration Directorate.

Can I travel before receiving the card?

Travelling before receiving the card is generally not recommended. If necessary, you can request a temporary travel document (Çıkış İzin Belgesi) from Migration before leaving, but it does not guarantee smooth re-entry.

What happens if my residency expires while abroad?

If your residency expires while you are abroad, you lose the right to re-enter with the same permit and must obtain a new entry visa, then start fresh residency procedures upon return.

Can I work on a student residency?

Yes — bachelor's students may work part-time after one year of student residency by obtaining a student work permit from the Turkish Ministry of Labour. Master's and PhD students may work immediately.

Can you process residency for my visiting family?

Yes, we help your family obtain a short-term tourist residency or family residency (Aile İkameti) if they wish to stay with you for more than 90 days, subject to income and health insurance requirements.

How is your service different from regular residency offices?

Regular offices charge TRY 3,000–5,000 for residency follow-up, while our service is entirely free for students enrolled with us for admissions, with follow-up from a legal team specialized in international student procedures.
